The Numbers Game

Remember that game that boys played in high school (and some still continue into college, unfortunately) where they rated the girls in their classes based on some number system, usually on a scale from 1 to 10?  Do you remember that number that you always got?  Well, I do.  I look back on that number, and I wonder why.  Why that number, and what exactly put me there?  I was always a 5.  Not pretty, not ugly.  Just...  There.  Nothing special.  Just...  Plain.  And why?  Is there anyone that can explain this number system to me?  I personally don't understand.  Everybody has a different opinion on what is "pretty" and the like, so how can a number system be all-encompassing?  Nobody is going to agree one hundred percent with another person's ratings, so why even play?  I guess I could explain why I'm writing this post, but that's a story within itself and I don't really want to get into it right now.

So I guess what I'm asking is, what exactly is the point of the numbers game?  How did the ratings get established?  And what was your number range (because, like I said, the numbers vary on who you ask)?

I think of myself as a 4, more or less.

Guys like to label things, I suppose. We enjoy using numbers, we enjoy comparing--there are a lot of good reasons why we rate things.

But I think also, don't see it as not being special. Quite honestly, I think being a 9 or 10 really sucks for women in some ways, because then you constantly get harassed by every guy with a pulse. If you're a 5 on average, that means some guys are thinking of you as an 8 or 9...it's an average, not just a standard 5. And that doesn't take into account your personality, of course.

I remember a couple years ago at work some guys were talking about a hypothetical "sexy girls at our workplace" calender. They talked about what 12 girls would make it and why. Being friends with everyone and being present at the time this conversation went down was really awkward: I knew a lot of girls wouldn't make it/aren't considered "hot," but I would never say so. Sometimes I'm a little sad that I even look at people and think, "she's ugly."

mmm I was always a 7. No one could ever tell me why. Not gonna complain though. I think being a 5 is good like Greek Physique said no one harasses you and that some guys do think of you as a higher number. Though I never quite understood the numbers game either and every guy I asked had a different set of rules and scales to go by.

@GreekPhysique -  Oh, I do still get harassed by one of my coworkers. He's kind of like that though. Not saying it's a good thing, I'm just saying that any girl in the building gets the same treatment. If it's female, it's all fair game to him >.>

@corpsegutted -  Where do you work? An office building type of deal? Doesn't gossip spread fast there?

@ALovingAdversary -  What types of scales do they go by, if you know? What features/things push a person up the list? I'm just curious.

@crazee4evr - Most scales by guys, if they are sharing with each other, tend to rate body higher than face, immodest and loud higher than modest and quiet, and sexually loose higher than conservative. Because you have to defend the ratings (guys like to argue), there's a certain emphasis on the obvious. However, guys don't necessarily pick their dates via the scale...which is a whole new topic, ha.

@crazee4evr -  if I remember right, some was eyes, mouth, figure, surprisingly hair, clothes, etc. It's whatever that particular guy found to be the best feature he was attracted to. Each time we got on the scale topic I told them it wasn't to precise to be a "game." Because everyone has different tastes.

@crazee4evr - It was a restaurant. Sometimes: this particular bit of gossip didn't really leave the group that initially were chatting about it.

@corpsegutted -  That's actually really impressive. At my job, everything is everywhere. Nothing is personal. We're one big dysfunctional family xD

@GreekPhysique -  Now you've got me curious: what do guys look for in a date? In general, of course. We all know it varies from person to person haha

@ALovingAdversary -  Honestly, hair doesn't surprise me. All the guys I know want a girl to have long hair. If she doesn't, she isn't as attractive to them. I don't get that but that's the way it is here.

@crazee4evr -  ah here hair doesn't matter so long as it looks good on them. I think I got told more often how great my hair was when it was short, but overall people tell me I'm gorgeous and beautiful more often now that my hair is very long. hmm...

@crazee4evr -  Eh, I think I'll sound like a caveman if I go much further explaining how the typical man thinks, ha. I don't know if it will do you good or not.
